Mr. Farooq has extensive experience in a wide range of corporate and commercial law matters including business and start-up formation and financing; joint ventures, international expansion/foreign investment, international acquisitions, business and personal property purchase and financing (e.g. aircraft, yachts, jewelry & art), investment funds formation and private placement of securities and other financial products.
Mr. Farooq also advises financial institutions and borrowers on conventional and Shari’ah-compliant financing transactions. For example, he has advised lenders and borrowers on a wide range of finance transactions involving aviation finance, real estate finance, asset-based lending, construction finance, project finance and acquisition finance arrangements. Additionally, he has assisted teams acting for underwriters and issuers in capital market transactions.
Leveraging on his prior media career, Mr. Farooq advises media clients on the effective use of global and local corporate structures and establishment formalities; technology and intellectual property matters; program acquisition, licensing, broadcasting and distribution matters; media regulation; broadcasting licenses and agreements; satellite platforms; strategic restructuring and expansion; litigation; information subpoenas; information requests; and defamation/libel.
He also assists immigration clients with U.S. business setup, purchase of business or franchise, business and investor visas, change/adjustment of status, employment-based immigration, family-based immigration and naturalization/citizenship matters.
Previously, Mr. Farooq has worked as Head of Legal of an investment bank based in the Qatar Financial Centre. He started his legal career with the international law firm Dentons. Prior to Dentons, Mr. Farooq worked for a public interest group in Washington, D.C., dealing primarily with U.S. Congress and federal agencies. He has also advised prime brokerages on developing their policies and procedures in accordance with NYSE Euronext Rules.
Before practicing law, Mr. Farooq worked as a journalist with global news organizations such as CNN and the Associated Press (AP) and as a public relations specialist with the global public relations firm Weber Shandwick Worldwide.
